Where other piano libraries leave you with a fixed piano sound that may or may not suit your project, Reason Pianos does just the opposite: these pianos were recorded using multiple microphones, leaving the mixing and shaping of your piano sound to you. You create piano sounds that suit your mix, not the other way around.
My favorites among them are the David Darlington NY Jazz Steinway, the Flatback Producer upright, and Niklas Flyckt Fat'N'Ambience. The Style patches chart more-daring territory.
You'd be hard-pressed to pick them out at all in a mix. Each of the sampled pianos in each miking configuration is included as an NN-XT patch by itself and embedded in a Combinator.
While you could spend hours using Pianos and never need more than the presets (especially with patch names the likes of 'Deathcab Slap' and 'Kings of Convenience'), the layout within each Combinator patch, makes it extremely easy to be your own engineer, mixing in more or less of a mic level, presence, release resonance, or hammer noise (among others). All these features are fantastic and very user-friendly. But what pushes this software ahead of all others is how it plays-like hearing the pedal noise gently shift the hammers back onto the strings after holding a chord for ten seconds, or the wonderfully out-of-tune, but in-tune feel of an upright.
Reason Pianos is an excellent-sounding, well-organized sampled-piano library. The 16-bit version is easy on your system, and you can always switch to the 24-bit version for final rendering (although you do have to swap sample sets manually). Even lighter NN-XT versions of each piano are included for quick sketching, and templates with labeled instruments, EQs, and mixers, but without samples, make creating your own Combinator patches a breeze.
The zones in the lowest and highest octaves span four semitones. The zoning strategy, along with sample looping, distinguishes Reason Pianos from most other high-end sampled pianos, which usually have more Velocity zones and sample every note for its full decay.
You will get two amazing pianos, two NNXT and two Combinators. You will have 2 pianos that feel, play and sound like no others piano refills you have played before.
I have both and enjoy both. I think the refill sounds better, but sometimes you'll here more 'trailing white noise' if you're playing a lot of notes and sustaining for a while. And while Radical Piano isn't quite as authentic sounding, it's still pretty damn good and you can really fine tune the settings. As someone else suggested, trial Radical Piano first and if you like it, maybe just go with the cheaper option. Keep in mind you can get the Radical Bundle also, which includes Radical Keys. My personal biggest gripe with the Radical REs is I didn't LOVE any of the presets. I found I had to adjust them to my liking.

You create piano sounds that suit your mix, not the other way around. A large selection of Combinator presets ranging from basic microphone setups to wide multi-mic patches guarantees you absolute sonic control. There's no one way to record a piano. And, there's no one way to mix one.
In the end if you want a real piano sound, you should just record with a real piano. Having said that the actual sounds themselves are not bad at all. Both come with various presets and different styles. The reason I would recommend Radical Piano is two-fold: • Given the nice visual interface you can easily tweak the piano parameter settings to create custom piano sounds. For example you can easily choose to combine 2 different pianos recorded with a different set of microphones to create a sound of your choosing - which may be somewhat realistic or kind of experimental (after some time trying to create realistic piano sounds, I have kind of accepted I will never have the perfect realistic sound, and am actually now enjoying exploring more unique sounds which would not be possible normally). • If you have continuous pedal support (as opposed to on-off pedals) on your keyboard, then the Radical Pianos extension can emulate the effect as with a real piano (it also supports half-pedal operation).
The instruments were recorded using up to ten of them (four stereo and two mono) and you can adjust their levels independently to suit your requirements (see the Mechanics of the mics boxout for more). The Reason Pianos are certainly flexible, then, but more importantly, they're extremely playable and sound tremendous. This is a much smaller collection than some of its plug-in contemporaries (even the 24-bit ReFill is only 1.35GB), but the level of quality is extremely high. The Yamaha C7 is probably the best all-rounder, with the Steinway D having a more 'classical' sound and the Steinway K offering a distinctive upright tone. At £120, Reason Pianos is also very reasonably priced, so deserves nothing less than a mighty thumbs-up.

Add some multi band compression for parallel compression, just go light on it; etc. You'll be able to get a very unique and expressive sound, and it'll sound good enough to put into a production, and not as if you were attempting and failed to get a realistic sounding piano. As a fellow pianist using Reason I have also been looking into how to get nice piano sounds. I have both the Reason piano refill, and also the Radical Pianos rack extension. IMO you would be better off getting the rack extension. The philosophy behind Reason Pianos is production, and a number of decisions have been made with the modern producer in mind. Although the pianos are very playable, they don't have all the bells and whistles of multigigabyte piano libraries aimed at the solo performer.

For example, there are patches that combine the jazz, ambient, and ribbon mics or the close and floor mics. For the more adventurous, there are Producer and Style collections containing 10 and 29 Combinator patches, respectively. A refill from Exode with 40 additional stylized patches is a free download for registered users. Moreover, every engineer has his or her own method. For this reason, Pianos has chosen to cover practically any way in which a piano can be recorded, using a total of ten mics (two mono mics and four stereo pairs). It's immediately clear toggling through the presets on even the same piano, how big a difference mic placement can make and how important it is in defining a style-whether it's focusing in on the mellow warmth from the soundboard and room ambience, or the punchy and crisp sound of the hammers hitting the strings. It's immediately clear that the quality of Pianos is extremely convincing and on par with any software that's already out there.
In short - regarding the quality of the samples and sounds there is not that much between them. However I would choose Radical Pianos simply because it is easier to tweak and customise your sound.
